The USDA Agricultural Research Service Cattle Heat Stress Alert system has forecast a cattle heat stress emergency July 17-20 and danger July 21-23 for most of Texas and southern Oklahoma. Heat indices, humidity and other factors are assessed to gauge the level of stress cattle will encounter during an extreme heat event. Actions such as not moving animals or working cattle early in the morning and ensuring cattle have adequate water access and unimpeded air flow are among the recommendations to minimize heat stress.
