Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 11.6 million head on June 1, 2018. The inventory was 4 percent above June 1, 2017. This is the highest June 1 inventory since the series began in 1996.

On June 1, there were 2.39 million head of cattle and calves on feed in the Northern High Plains, 87 percent of the state’s total. The number on feed across the area was up 2 percent from last year and up 4 percent from the May 1 total. May placements in the Northern High Plains totaled 499 thousand head, up 51 percent from the April total. Marketings were up 3 percent from last month at 395 thousand head.
