US Cattle on Feed up 6 percent, Texas up 3 percent

Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 11.1 million head on Sept. 1, 2018, up 6 percent above Sept. 1, 2017, inventory. This is the highest September 1 inventory since the series began in 1996. Click here to read the USDA-NASS U.S. Cattle on Feed report released on Sept. 21, 2018.

Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in Texas feedlots with capacity of 1,000 head or more totaled 2.68 million head on Sept. 1, 2018, up 3 percent from a year ago. Producers placed 415 thousand head in commercial feedlots during August, up 8 percent from a year ago. Texas commercial feeders marketed 440 thousand head during August, up 1 percent from 2017.
