With forecasts predicting continued dryness, moving your cattle off wheat pasture at the right time is of particular importance this year. According to Dave Marburger, Oklahoma State University small grains Extension specialist, the optimal time to do that is at a growth stage in your wheat called first hollow stem. Knowing exactly when that occurs, though, is often a challenge, which is why researchers at OSU developed the First Hollow Stem Advisor – an online tool that can be found on the Mesonet website that farmers can use to help make that determination.
