Will Hurd represents the 23rd District of Texas, stretching from San Antonio to El Paso and including hundreds of miles of the U.S. – Mexico border. Hurd is a member of the House Committee on Homeland Security and was recently appointed to the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. A former undercover CIA officer, Hurd is a leading voice on national security and cybersecurity.

Dr. Douglas Holtz-Eakin is the former director of the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office and the former chief economist of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers. Hear from Taya Kyle, wife of the late U.S. Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle and author of the New York Times bestselling book, American Wife. The state’s population is growing rapidly, increasing the need for land for public resources such as energy and transportation. But landowners recognize that their property rights must be better protected, not only for themselves but also for future generations. The Texans for Property Rights coalition was established to combine the resources of associations representing Texas landowners. This session will provide an update on coalition efforts and focus on eminent domain issues in the 2017 legislative session.
The Politics of Antimicrobial Resistance

Tackle the story behind the rise of antibiotic resistance. Laura Kahn MD, author and public health specialist, will share her research from more than 6 years of work, which is bringing insight into the rise of antimicrobial resistance. Her talk will look at the differing perspectives – from doctors and ranchers – and the politics that have led to where we are today. Her talk will draw upon her new book, One Health and the Politics of Antimicrobial Resistance, and she will offer thoughts on what we could do going forward to address antimicrobial resistance.

U.S. ranchers annually export more than $6 billion in beef to international markets. Maintaining a vibrant export trade is the responsibility of the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF). Come hear from Erin Borror, an economist with USMEF, as she discusses emerging export markets such as China and Indonesia, as well as growing markets like Japan and Hong Kong.

By April, the 2017 Texas legislative session will be in full swing. Numerous agricultural priorities such as groundwater rights, transportation, eminent domain, energy and wildlife issues will dominate the 2017 legislative agenda. Jason Skaggs leads TSCRA’s legislative and regulatory efforts in Austin and will provide an update on how rancher and landowner interests are being affected by the state legislature.
