Ranchers gather for event in Matagorda County

Almost 400 ranchers and landowners attended an event hosted by 7J Ranch owned by George and Donna Harrison in Matagorda County April 26. Texas Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples was one of the highlights of the afternoon. Topics discussed were cow nutrition, sustained nutrition and feedlot management. There was also an update on the 2014 Farm Bill and Livestock Forage Disaster Program from Judith Canales, USDA Farm Service Agency, Texas state executive director. Attendees were also treated to a live demonstration featuring information on starting ranch horses from the ground up by Stephen Weathers and gulf coast replacement heifer selection facilitated by Trey Scherer. TSCRA President Pete Bonds and TSCRA Special Ranger Tommy Charbula spoke about TSCRA activities.
Special thanks go to Bay City Feed for their exceptional support of this event. Thanks also go to platinum sponsors Bay City Feed, Capital Farm Credit, Novartis Animal Health, Purina, Ranger Gate and Shoppas Farm Supply. Gold and Bronze sponsors included Ag Southwest Crop and Ranch Insurance, AgriLabs, Animal Health International, Boehringer Ingelheim, Inc., First State Bank, Cattlewomen’s Association of Matagorda County, and Matagorda County Cattleman’s Association.
