Studies have shown that a more gradual approach to weaning can reduce the detrimental behavioral changes associated with stress caused by the abrupt removal of calves from cows. In a two-step weaning process, calves remain with the cows but are prevented from nursing. This emulates a more natural weaning process where calves would remain with the herd after they’ve been weaned, and could reduce the incidences of shipping fever and other weaning-time sickness.
