According to numbers released by the USDA on Friday, Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in the U.S. for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 10.1 million head on Sept. 1, 2016. The inventory was 1 percent above Sept. 1, 2015. Placements in feedlots during August totaled 1.88 million head, 15 percent above 2015. Marketings of fed cattle during August totaled 1.87 million head, 18 percent above 2015. For Texas, numbers were down 1 percent from August 2016 and up 2 percent from this time last year.
