The USDA released the latest numbers on Jan. 22, confirming cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in the U.S. for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 10.6 million head on Jan. 1, 2016, slightly below Jan. 1, 2015. The inventory included 7.16 million steers and steer calves, up 3 percent from the previous year. Heifers and heifer calves accounted for 3.41 million head, down 7 percent from 2015. Texas numbers followed national numbers, reporting 4 percent below January 2015 numbers and 4 percent below December 2015. Click here to read the report in full (PDF)
