Livestock Wx for the week of June 13, 2018:  Record Hot May

May was hot — unusually hot! May 2018 set a new record temperature for the contiguous U.S.

Record or near-record temperatures were observed over the South Central and Southwest U.S. It was the hottest May on record for Oklahoma and in the top 3 hottest months of May for many U.S. states.

More Variable Rainfall — But On The Dry Side

Rainfall was a bit more variable. Oklahoma experienced an uptick in rain in spots and came in as the 48th wettest out of the past 124 years — fairly close to average. However, Texas was much drier, coming in as the 19th driest month of May on record.

Looking Ahead to July

NOAA’s long-range North American Multi-Model Ensemble (NMME) model has just been updated and shows a continuation of unusually hot weather (orange shades below) during the month of July over most of the Southwest U.S. including Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas.

There is the possibility of a increase in rain over parts of the Southwest (green shades) but unusually dry conditions (brown shades) look to continue over the South Central U.S.
