The Environmental Protection Agency early in the morning of June 29 published its rule on the Waters of the United States under the Clean Water Act. Under a 60-day notice period, the rule goes into effect on Aug. 28.
By the time the July 4 holiday rolled around, 27 states and state agencies as well as 14 agriculture-oriented organizations had filed lawsuits.
Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas filed suit in U.S. District Court in Galveston, Texas.
Legal action has also come from Oklahoma, according to a July 8 report from Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt.
