Using record funding allocated last year by the Texas Legislature to fight aquatic invasive species, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and its partners are treating thousands of acres of lake-smothering giant salvinia and water hyacinth, forging partnerships with hundreds of riverside landowners to treat Arundo and saltcedar, and launching a multi-faceted public awareness campaign to slow the spread of zebra mussels, giant salvinia, and numerous other aquatic invasive species.
These are but a few of the nearly 40 projects now underway statewide supported through a comprehensive effort to combat aquatic invasive species.
The new Fighting Aquatic Invaders web pages will track progress of these projects, which address three major strategies: (1) Outreach and Prevention, (2) Research and Development, and (3) Aquatic Invasive Plant Management.
