BQA tip for March: When you should – and shouldn't – disinfect needles

Never disinfect needles when giving vaccines. Disinfecting needles can reduce the efficacy of the vaccine. If a needle gets dirty, dispose of it and get a new one. In contrast, clean implant needles between each use. This can be done by soaking a sponge in a solution of water and disinfectant (e.g. chlorhexidine). Wipe the implant needle across the wet sponge between usage on each animal. A new paint tray works well to hold the sponge and implant gun. Never dip the needle in the disinfectant solution because it will create problems when trying to administer the next implant. Are you a certified Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) producer?
