The future of the cattle industry is in the hands of the young. Established in 2010, a new program under the Five Nations Beef Alliance attracts brings together young leaders from Australia, Canada, Mexico, New Zealand and the U.S. who are passionate about the future direction of the beef industry. The program is open to anyone ages 18 to 35 who is involved in the cattle industry. The next meeting is scheduled in Denver on Jan. 8-15, 2011. The deadline for registration is Dec. 15, 2010. To help farmers and ranchers keep their land intact and pass it on to the next generation, the Texas Agricultural Land Trust (TALT) is hosting two “Saving Family Lands” Seminars.” The three-hour seminar, which is designed for landowners, CPAs, attorneys and anyone else who deals with the issues inherent in passing family land on to future generations, will be taught by Steve Small, who is the nation’s leading authority on private land protection options and strategies. More than 30 young cattle raisers gathered this afternoon in the TSCRA headquarters Brand Room for the August Young Leadership Series, sponsored by Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health. The Saturday session is expected to draw more than 40 young cattle raisers to the full-day event. TSCRA’s Young Leadership Series program, sponsored by Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health, provides educational opportunities for cattle raisers and supporters of the beef production industry, ages 19 to 39. more…

Watching the bottom line in an operation is more important than ever in the cattle business, and there’s not much room for equipment-related purchases that aren’t absolutely necessary. On average, cow-calf producers operate on something around a $40 per calf profit margin, said Dr. Ron Gill, AgriLife Extension beef cattle specialist and associate department head for the department of animal science at Texas A&M. Fort Worth, Texas – Ranchers in the Hopkins County area can attend a free Cattlemen’s Field Day hosted by the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association (TSCRA). The field day will take place Monday, June 21, at the Professional Agricultural Workers Building in Sulphur Springs.
