Ranching 101 attendees hear about plant identification and control

Attendees of Tuesday’s Ranching 101 session at TSCRA headquarters in Fort Worth learned how to identify, optimize, fertilize and control plants from the experts at Texas A&M AgriLife Extension and Dow AgroSciences. This free, 2-day event will be held in College Station Aug. 13-14. The Beef 706 program covers the importance of producing a consistent and high quality beef product through a series of hands-on lessons presented by Texas A&M University. Participants are divided into groups, allowed to select live cattle (through video) and then follow those cattle through grading and hands-on cutting sessions, which allows the participant a chance to experience first-hand the differences encountered in carcass composition. Information on genetic selection, marbling, evaluating market cattle, grid buying, branded programs and virtual tours of packing plants are also included. TSCRA student outreach program held at Angelo State University

Angelo State University (ASU) hosted a TSCRA outreach event for students Monday evening in San Angelo. Attendees heard from TSCRA’s Association Promotion Vice Chair Dennis Webb about how being involved in TSCRA has benefitted him and why the students should be involved. Committee member Zeb York also told attendees about the association’s young member programs and TSCRA Second Vice President Richard Thorpe discussed importance of being involved in an organization like TSCRA. Ranching 101 Series talks cattle marketing options in Fort Worth

TSCRA hosted the March Ranching 101 Series in Fort Worth Tuesday afternoon, welcoming more than 25 attendees for an afternoon session to discuss marketing options for cows, calves and bulls. Tim Niedecken, TSCRA executive director, association services, covered topics including what happens at a livestock market for sellers, buyers and the cattle; preparing your cattle for market and what your options are for contracts, sales, treaties and partnerships; and current marketing issues affecting the cattle industry, like foreign currencies, drought, export markets and truck weights. TAHC adopts revisions to Texas’ cattle trich program

The Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) adopted revisions to Texas’ cattle trichomoniasis program during the quarterly Commission Meeting on Oct. 5. Bovine trichomoniasis, or trich, is a venereal disease found in cattle, but does not affect humans or other livestock. Infected breeding bulls continue to appear and act normal. Only testing by a veterinary practitioner will confirm the presence or absence of the disease. Read more…

The Texas Wildlife Association (TWA) and TSCRA are teaming up to offer landowners an educational seminar featuring expert information on the electric transmission line process (CREZ) and options for private landowners who may be impacted by the proposed transmission line routes. The seminar is scheduled for Oct. 8 in Kerrville at the UGRA Guadalupe Basin Natural Resources Center. Future meetings are scheduled for Cleburne and Lubbock. Five Nations Beef Alliance Young Ranchers Program announced for 2011

The future of the cattle industry is in the hands of the young. Established in 2010, a new program under the Five Nations Beef Alliance attracts brings together young leaders from Australia, Canada, Mexico, New Zealand and the U.S. who are passionate about the future direction of the beef industry. The program is open to anyone ages 18 to 35 who is involved in the cattle industry. The next meeting is scheduled in Denver on Jan. 8-15, 2011. The deadline for registration is Dec. 15, 2010. Texas Agricultural Land Trust Hosts “Saving Family Lands” Seminars

To help farmers and ranchers keep their land intact and pass it on to the next generation, the Texas Agricultural Land Trust (TALT) is hosting two “Saving Family Lands” Seminars.” The three-hour seminar, which is designed for landowners, CPAs, attorneys and anyone else who deals with the issues inherent in passing family land on to future generations, will be taught by Steve Small, who is the nation’s leading authority on private land protection options and strategies. More than 30 young cattle raisers gathered this afternoon in the TSCRA headquarters Brand Room for the August Young Leadership Series, sponsored by Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health. The Saturday session is expected to draw more than 40 young cattle raisers to the full-day event. TSCRA’s Young Leadership Series program, sponsored by Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health, provides educational opportunities for cattle raisers and supporters of the beef production industry, ages 19 to 39. Extension expert: Keep expenses in check when in cattle business

Watching the bottom line in an operation is more important than ever in the cattle business, and there’s not much room for equipment-related purchases that aren’t absolutely necessary. On average, cow-calf producers operate on something around a $40 per calf profit margin, said Dr. Ron Gill, AgriLife Extension beef cattle specialist and associate department head for the department of animal science at Texas A&M. Gill reminded producers to be mindful of operation expenses. Read more…
