Rabobank researchers anticipate more pressure for cattle feeders

Rabobank’s International Food & Agribusiness Research and Advisory (FAR) group released a report last week predicting continued pressure for cattle feeders in the U.S. FAR group’s “U.S. Cattle Market Update: The Rain Isn’t Falling, but Neither is the Sky!” report notes that weather is the main driver for the beef industry for the second year in a row. The Lean Finely Textured Beef (LFTB) crisis, which upset normal seasonal price trends for the first half of the year, will be overshadowed by the drought’s effects on the second half of 2012, according to the news release. TSCRA Crime Watch: Cattle missing in Oklahoma

TSCRA Special Ranger Bart Perrier, Dist. 4 in central Oklahoma, reports missing one bull and 10 cows from a property in Kingfisher County. Sometime between Aug. 1 and Aug. 3, the cattle are believed to have crossed a dry riverbed at the victim’s property near Dover and are strayed. The bull is a 2,000 pound black Main/Angus cross with no brand and a “513” ear tag. The cows are black, approximately 1200 pounds each and have a Lazy S brand on the left hip. Woman reunited with stolen horse after almost 10 years

Michelle Pool never stopped thinking about Opie, her American Saddlebred horse stolen from her father’s pasture in San Antonio nearly 10 years ago. Pool reported the horse stolen in 2003 but, despite extensive publicity, Opie was nowhere to be found. Now, she is looking to the future with Opie after the horse was found and returned to her. For the week ending Aug. 4, 2012, feeder cattle prices at Texas auctions were steady to as much as $12 higher per hundredweight (cwt), although a few locations noted lower prices on part of their offerings. Texas direct feeder cattle sales were mostly $1 to $3 higher. At the Oklahoma City National Stockyards, feeder cattle were $2 to $4 higher and calves were $2 to $3 lower. Tight supplies and lower feed grains for much of the week contributed to the higher prices, although negative cattle feeding margins limited the increase. The fed cattle cash trade was $3.50 higher per cwt following several weeks of light marketings. Wholesale beef prices were higher. Read more…
