The Texas House Land and Resource Management Committee held a hearing Monday at the Texas State Capitol in Austin regarding eminent domain issues relating to oil and gas pipeline activities. Clayton Henry, a TSCRA member from Wichita Falls, delivered testimony on behalf of TSCRA and stressed the importance of protecting private property rights in oil and gas pipeline condemnation cases. Henry serves on TSCRA’s Legislative and Tax Committee. Citing a growing interest in the local food movement among Texans, Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples encouraged diners Friday to support Texas farmers and ranchers by eating at restaurants participating in the upcoming GO TEXAN Restaurant Round-Up, presented by Farm Credit, July 23-29. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced on July 23 new flexibility and assistance in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) major conservation programs to get much-needed help to livestock producers as the most wide-spread drought in seven decades intensifies in the U.S. Vilsack also announced plans to encourage crop insurance companies to provide a short grace period for farmers on unpaid insurance premiums, as some farming families can be expected to struggle to make ends meet at the close of the crop year. more…
The continued worsening of the drought has cattle markets on the defensive in just about every respect. The Senate Agriculture Committee is set to hold a hearing on a bill this week that would require farmers to use larger cages for egg-laying hens, which eventually could find its way into the 2012 Farm Bill. The fight pits the large United Egg Producers (UEP) against the much smaller and newer Egg Farmers of America. more…
