TSCRA Special Rangers participate in DPS hurricane preparedness exercise

The Texas Department of Public Safety Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) hosted a hurricane emergency response exercise and resource showcase in Austin, Friday, June 1. Various resources, equipment, vehicles and numerous emergency responders from around the state convened at Austin Bergstrom International Airport to conduct interoperability and resource capability assessments, as well as logistical planning. Aging threatens Texas farms, ranches

Fewer young people are being drawn to farming and ranching for a living. That worries policymakers who are focused on expanding the nation’s food supplies in the face of booming world demand. Instead of falling into a tailspin, however, farmers and ranchers are focused on finding solutions. Many remain optimistic that an industry accustomed to challenges will overcome its latest roadblocks. USDA instructs FSA to proceed with office consolidation plan

James B. Douglass, acting Texas state executive director for the Farm Service Agency (FSA), announced on May 30 that USDA Secretary Thomas A. Vilsack had approved the closure of 15 FSA county offices in Texas, a process that will begin immediately. After the required notifications have been provided to producers, FSA employees and office landlords, closure dates will be established and made publicly available. The county offices confirmed for closure in Texas are: Andrews, Cass-Marion, Delta, Hutchinson, Lee, Midland, Mills, Roberts, Rusk, San Augustine-Sabine, Shelby, Upshur-Gregg, Val Verde, Van Zandt and Waller. Cow-Calf Corner: Sorting out beef production data; Understanding wet hay

In the June 4 issue of OSU Extension’s Cow-Calf Corner newsletter, Dr. Derrell Peel discusses how cattle producers and market analysts alike are trying to sort out seemingly conflicted data on beef production to understand what to expect in the coming weeks. Dr. Glenn Selk also talks wet hay. Producers that harvest hay occasionally will put up hay that “gets wet” from time to time. Therefore, ranchers and hay farmers need to understand the impact of “wet hay” in the tightly wound bales. Read more…
