Horses seized at Texas border test positive for EP

U.S. Border Patrol agents recently seized 10 adult and four yearling horses near Indian Hot Springs, south of El Paso, after an attempt was made to smuggle the animals across the Rio Grande River into Texas. The horses were turned over to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal Plant Health Inspection Service, Veterinary Service (USDA-APHIS/VS) and underwent disease testing. All 10 of the adult animals tested positive for equine piroplasmosis (EP), a blood-borne protozoal disease that can be fatal to horses, but does not affect humans.
