TSCRA Honorary Director James “Jim” Monroe Brizendine passed away on Friday, April 27. Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 1, at Starrville Cemetery, Winona, followed by a memorial service at 11:30 a.m. at Starrville Methodist Church in Winona, under direction of Burks Walker Tippit Funeral Directors. The family will receive friends at the funeral home, 215 East Front Street, Tyler, from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m., Monday, April 30. Upcoming Texas Beef Quality Producer (TBQP) program meetings are planned in Bowie on May 8 and Brady on May 15. The TBQP program promotes good management practices for cattle producers in an effort to strengthen consumer confidence in beef as a wholesome food product. Join the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association (TSCRA) for a ranch gathering on Tuesday, May 8, at Bonds Ranch in Saginaw. The Obama administration’s top environmental official in the south and southwest region has resigned after Republicans targeted him over remarks made two years ago when he used the word “crucify” to describe his approach to enforcement. In a letter to EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson sent Sunday, Al Armendariz says he regrets his words and stresses that they do not reflect his work as administrator of the 5-state region including Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana. more…

“Poor bob-white,” the iconic song of one of America’s most popular game birds, is fading into a golden oldie as quail disappear in massive numbers. Now thousands of Texans want to know where all the quail have gone. To find the answers, the Rolling Plains Quail Research Foundation (RPQRF) will provide $1.5 million to staff a new laboratory at The Institute of Environmental and Human Health (TIEHH) at Texas Tech that will support the assessment of diseases, parasites and contaminants that could impact quail. more…
