Cattle futures were higher at midday. News that a California dairy cow tested positive for BSE sent CME futures down the daily limit on Tuesday, but prices bounced from the lows in electronic trading late Tuesday and were higher Wednesday amid assurances from most beef importing countries that they are not planning to restrict beef imports from the U.S. JBS also issued a release stating business will not be jeopardized following Tuesday’s report of BSE. more…

The American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD) has given full accreditation to the Texas Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory (TVMDL) through 2016. TVMDL remains the only AAVLD-accredited laboratory in Texas and is among only 35 such facilities in the U.S. The accreditation includes TVMDL’s full-service labs in College Station and Amarillo, as well as its poultry labs in Center and Gonzales. more…

Though there remained large areas still stricken, the number of counties under drought conditions continued to shrink. In many counties, with lush growth brought on by recent rains, producers continued to bale a great deal of cool-season grasses for hay. Though the hay is certainly welcome, the flush of growth is holding back warm-season grasses, including Bermuda grass, Bahia grass and native species. more…
