TSCRA Crime Watch: Steers shot in Hugo, Okla.

TSCRA Special Ranger John Cummings, Dist. 5 in southwest Oklahoma, reports that on April 1, three black steers were shot with a rifle from a roadway and adjoining pasture near Hugo in Choctaw County. Senate bill proposes updating farm bill to 21st Century US farm supports

Senate Agriculture Committee leaders unveiled a proposal on Friday that would eliminate the $5 billion-a-year “direct payment” subsidy that is paid regardless of need and is a target of reformers. Overall, the Senate bill would cut spending by $23 billion over 10 years, mostly in crop subsidies. Committee members are scheduled to meet this week to discuss amendments. Read more…

The latest USDA Cattle on Feed report contained few surprises in the overall numbers for placements and marketings. However, a closer look at the report reveals a continuation of recent trends that reflect more regional differences in cattle markets. The mild winter and early, wet spring in Oklahoma have been a blessing. However, insects that are vectors for the cattle disease anaplasmosis have also enjoyed the weather and are quite plentiful.
